August 7, 2009 : My husband and I were exploring Lake Minnewanka in Banff National Park, Canada, when we stopped for a timed picture of the two of us. We had our camera set up on some rocks and were getting ready to take the picture when this curious little ground squirrel appeared, became intrigued with the sound of the focusing camera and popped right into our shot! A once in a lifetime moment! We were laughing about this little guy for days!

August 11, 2009 : Andrew saved this young sperm whale's life when some false killer whales attacked it. The sperm whale, now a seven-year-old adolescent male, is called Scar. I was lucky enough to witness the two of them playing together. Scar has been known to come to Andrew when called. He has been very gentle with people in the water with him, but is reaching the time when he will leave his pod and travel to other locations, looking for food and a mate.

A few years ago I was on a flight home from Miami. My brother Sam and I had just gone on a carribean cruise with my grandparents (Papa Jim and Grandma Ida) celebrating Sammy's high school graduation. Anyways... by chance I was sitting next to a young couple who informed me that they too were flying home from a carribean cruise. We got to talking and they told me that next weekend they were getting married. I couldn't believe this when they told me. I thought for sure that there must have been a time conflict and they were forced to take their honeymoon before the wedding, but that wasn't it at all. They simply wanted some time to relax before their big day. Genius! Turns out they had planned on taking their honeymoon a few months after the wedding so that they could fully enjoy the time with their friends and family.

This has always stuck with me and when it was time to plan our wedding I of course wanted to do a pre wedding relaxation vacation, but of course realistically we couldn't afford to do anything like a Carribean cruise. So instead, Trev and I along with a handful of our friends headed up to Leavenworth a few days early so that we could get some relaxation in before the big day. Thursday before the wedding we did exactly that. A 4 hour float down the Icicle, which turns into the Wenatchee, river. We had so much fun that we decided to do it with even more of our friends and family the day after the wedding. Here are a few pics from our mini relaxation vacation.

To every bride and groom out there! This is the best advice I will ever give you.... during your wedding week take time to relax and HAVE FUN with the people who love you!

On another note. Whatever happened to birthday spankings? I can remember my kindergarten teacher giving birthday spankings (one for every year we were alive) to each of his students on our birthday. I suppose that was 20 years ago and would probably never happen in todays classrooms. I always thought it was funny.

1) I gag when I brush my teeth... almost every time.

For those of you who have been wondering where I have been hiding for the past few weeks... I have been busy working at my new job! To some of you this might be old news, but I realized today that I have yet to actually blog about it.

I had an interview with Plexipixel Inc. the Monday after graduation and the Wednesday after that was my first day on the job. For the last two weeks I have been doing interactive design work with a fantastic team of designers and developers. I love my job and am so lucky to be where I am at so soon after graduation.

Wow! I truly believe that I am one of the happiest people on this planet right now. I just had my panel presentation. Panel presentation is what I have been working so hard for my entire school career. It is where we show a panel of faculty our portfolios and they tell us whether we pass or fail.

I Passed!!!

It hasn't been an easy summer, I have had to miss out on a lot, but this feeling of accomplishment and pride that I have right now is definitely worth all of the hard work and stress.

The day after her special birthday (8/8/08) my Mom won the women's club championship at Bear Creek Country Club. Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!! First thing in the morning on the Fourth of July, Trevor and I went up to the Tulalip Indian reservation to get some fireworks for the evening. It was supposed to be a quick grab n go trip, but as we were driving in the gravel parking lot, a man informed us that our tire was flat. Luckily we were only blocks away from a Wal-Mart. We spent 2 long hours at Wal-Mart waiting for our new tire, eating McDonald's, and appreciating America.

As soon as our tire was replaced, we made a B-line for the Mercer Island Beach club where we met up with Trevor's family. It was cold, but we still went swimming. Trevor, Shawn, and I did an awesome synchronized swimming routine!

After we showered up, we headed out to my Aunt Sabrina and Uncle Dan's for a BBQ! Papa Jim and Grandma Ida were also there. We talked about the wedding, and our upcoming Mexican Cruise while we ate hot dogs, and sipped fuzzy navels. :) Yum! We also got to meet Harry, Sabrina and Dan's new pug.

After the sun went down we coordinated a rendezvous at Mom & Dave's for our fireworks show. When we arrived the neighbors were already setting up camp, expecting us to put on a show. Sam and Trev lit the fireworks, and the neighbors heckled. We performed the annual strobe light dance, (if you don't know what it is, you just have to be there). Dave definitely took the trophy for best strobe dancing. It was a fun night, but next year the neighbors better pitch in if they want a show! You know who you are!

One Tough Mama

This weekend was my best friend Erin's 23rd birthday! The plan was to meet at Las Margaritas at 5. Erin told me that she had done something crazy, but that she wouldn't tell me what it was until dinner. She also told me, that I might be mad at her. I absolutely hate when I don't know something and so of course I had many guesses as to what it was ... a few of my guesses were strange and not appropriate for this blog I admit, but what could possibly make me mad at her? As soon as she arrived at the restaurant, she pulled out her phone and showed me this picture.

Erin bought herself a bike! Of course I gave her the "mom talk" about how she has to think about me and Will (her 2.5 year old) every time she gets on it.

After dinner and a Sombrero wearing birthday song, we headed down to Emerald Queen Casino to watch one of Erin's UFC friends fight. Everyone was really excited to see my reaction to the fighting, I was just plain scared. Lucky for me, but to the disappointment of everyone else the fight was sold out. Erin did get to see her friend fight though, some guy gave her a ticket and she walked in the stadium just as they were calling out his name. He won the fight. Erin, her friend Brian and I gambled $10 collectively at the slot machines. Our favorite was the UNICORN! It was definitely the most fun and the cheapest (1 cent). We lost all of our money on the unicorn because some lady, who we think works for the casino, told us that we wouldn't win any money if we only bet 1 cent so we started betting higher and EQC took our ten dollars. :( After hanging out at the Casino just long enough for our clothes to smell we headed back towards Seattle. We decided to go to theater sports, an improv comedy show, at pikes market. It was a special night because they had their regular improv people, but then they had Japanese improv people who didn't speak a word of english. Some of the translation was hilarious. Overall it was an awesome night celebrating my best friends birthday. Love you Erin, no matter what crazy things you do!

You know you've been together for 6 years when...

I picked Trev up from work today and in the middle of our conversation on our drive home I had a revelation. In a mini panic I looked at my phone to check the date. Yep it was true, yesterday was the 6th anniversary of our 'first date' and both of us completely forgot! So I guess we celebrated our relationship with subway and the bachelorette! Now that I think about it, I wouldn't have had it any other way. Love you baby!

Trevor and I took the bus downtown to have dinner at Pikes Pub and do some shopping. We went to the bus stop to head home, and while we were checking the time table to see when the bus was coming a little woman asked us what time it was. I looked at my phone and told her the time. Our bus wasn't coming for 25 minutes so we decided to go across the street to McDonalds for some ice cream. The woman followed us and was behind us in line. We talked for a while about how the McDonalds remodel was nice, and about the McDonalds security guard. After we got our ice cream we sat down to a table with her and continued our conversation. She was really worried about missing her bus, but she did tell us that she did poetry and astrology. As she was leaving she gave me her card and told me to check out her web site. We drove up north to see the tulips on Sunday, but to our disappointment they had all been harvested. We did however find this pasture of nearly dead daffodils. We also had a great lunch in the town of Laconner, and stood in line for 45 minutes to get a giant scoop of ice cream.

Heartbreak

As you know from my last post Trevor and Erin wanted to get me a kitten for my birthday. I was so excited to finally pick out my new baby, I even bought an automatic litter box so that we would be prepared for the day we brought him/her home. When we moved into our apartment we noticed that there was a damage deposit that all pet owners must pay. So tonight we called our landlord and asked him how much that it was going to cost us. To my heartache he explained that the rules had changed and that he was no longer allowing people to have pets in the building. I can't help but feel sad. :(

Birthday Weekend!

This year for my birthday, Erin, Trev, Chris and I went on a weekend trip to Seaside, Or. We left really late on friday night because Chris didn't get off work until 10pm. At around 1:30 AM Trevor was pulled over for speeding in the middle of nowhere Oregon. Luckily she let us off with a warning, but in reality we don't think Trev was speeding, we think she was just bored and ours was the first car to come through there in hours. We got to the beach at around 2:30 and stayed up talking until 4!

The next morning Erin woke up to me, like a kid on christmas, ready to go! After all it was the most amazing day, at one point the thermometer reached 70 degrees! We went to Bagel by the Sea for breakfast, did some shopping, and walked along the beach. When we returned the boys were just getting up and heading out with the canoe to drop the crab pot. More than enough time had gone by to drop the crab pot and the boys still weren't back. We started to wonder what was taking them so long, so we hopped on the bikes and rode down to the bridge where we could see them standing on a bank, quite a ways down the river. While Trev and Chris were taking a leisurely stroll down the river, they had been stopped by a police officer. Apparently it is illegal to canoe without a life jacket, even when you can stand up in the completely still water that you are canoeing in. Once again we had a run in with a bored police officer, but this time we weren't as lucky. Even after showing Officer Oconnor Chris's military ID, he gave Trev a ticket. We walked the canoe back to the house and headed off to Cannon Beach.

Cannon Beach was amazing, we walked out to haystack rock and Erin and I waded around in the tide pools. We found a lot of hermit crabs that looked like tarantulas with shells. I didn't really like them. On our way back to Seaside, Erin and I got our noses pierced. I almost chickened out as always :) We went to Dundee's for dinner (best chicken strips ever!), then we had a fire on the beach. After putting out the fire, we went to Girtles for some Karaoke! We never did decide on a song and we were all getting tired, so we went home, made funfetti cupcakes, and went to bed.

On the ride home we didn't have any run ins with the law. Around factoria, Erin pulled off an exit and was going a way that I had never gone. I didn't think it was possible for her way to be faster, but I wasn't in any hurry and didn't complain. I was starting to get very confused as to where we were going, but I still played along until we pulled into the humane society parking lot. My eyes lit up with excitement and I immediately turned to Trev. WHAT! I have been wanting a cat for so long, but Trev had been resisting. Turns out that Erin and Trev had been planning to surprise me with this on my birthday for a while. They even had a cat carrier in the trunk, covered by a black plastic bag. sneaky sneaky! We went into the building, but were unsuccessful in picking out a kitty. The one that I loved, was sick :( Don't worry I'm going to keep looking!

It was an amazing birthday weekend. I have the best friends and fiance!

This is my first post on the blog, and it's a very important one - Stephanie Newcomb is 23 years old today!

I met you when we were only 10. Now, here you are, 13 years later, and I can’t help but to love you more every day.
When I think about your life so far, many events pop in my head, whether it was a story you told me, or something I experienced first-hand.

Here are a few of my favorites:

You were in 4^th grade and new to your school - and there was a sack lunch bandit on the loose! The kids in your class were losing their food to some unknown, well-nourished thief.
After this had gone on for a few days, a girl spotted the culprit. She went to the teacher with the surprising news.
That day, you walked in from recess, and in front of the entire class, the Teacher looked at you and said, “I know what you’ve been doing”. With shock, you replied, “What?”
“Don’t act like you don’t know what I’m talking about, you’ve been stealing these kids’ lunches!”
You felt completely embarrassed, more vulnerable then you had ever felt. Before you could say anything, the eyewitness said, “No, not her. It was the other Stephanie!”
You didn’t commit the crime, but you had felt like you did, as you stood in front of your class, wrongly accused by your own teacher.

I always feel for you when I hear that story. But then I laugh :)

Another good one, was when you were playing video games at Godfather’s Pizza. You, a young girl at the time, were told by your Dad that it was time to leave. But not if it was up to Stephanie – you needed more quarters for more games!
Because you were so adamant about playing more games, your dad was forced to almost drag you out of Godfather’s. You began to scream, “Help me! This man is not my dad! Help!”
I can only imagine being a person in the restaurant, contemplating whether I save this little girl from being kidnapped, or not. Better yet, being your dad, as your own daughter proclaimed you as an abductor in a room full of strangers. But luckily, you didn’t seem convincing enough, as everyone continued minding their own business.

But selfishly, my favorite memory about your 23 years, is when I met you for the first time. You were new to the neighborhood, and your Grandma Kathy was introducing this very cute girl to all the neighbor kids. I was fresh off a nice slide from the Slip ‘N Slide, my 10-year-old biceps gleaming in the sun. I quickly put on my shirt, so I wouldn’t intimidate you with my blindingly, egg-white skin.
As your grandma introduced you to all of us, I could not wipe the stupid smile off of my face. Knowing almost nothing about you, I later told Kristen “I think I like her” – also knowing full well that this 10-year-old gossip queen would quickly deliver that information to Stephanie.
It was like at first sight – the first girl I ever liked. I mean there was Pam Harding in the 4^th grade, but I only “liked” her for her taste in lunch boxes (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles).
I then spent the rest of the summer walking by Kristen’s or your grandparent’s house – just hoping that you were outside. And 13 years later, not much has changed. I value every moment I have with you. You are an amazing person, Steph. I love you.

Olympic National Park

Trevor and I have a bit of an obsession with national parks and so when we awoke to a beautiful morning we decided what better way to spend the day. It was a full day of climbing snow covered mountains, dipping our feet into beautiful blue lakes, and enjoying a west coast sunset completely alone on the incredible Ruby beach. What an experience! We are planning our next big National Park trip to Yellowstone in May, but are hoping to do a quick weekend trip down to Crater Lake National Park sometime before then. Yay!

A 10 pound baby boy named Trevor Joel Whitney was born to Brian and Marceil Whitney at around 5:15pm.

These are the facts;

Trevor Joel Whitney traveled to Chile when he was just 3 years old, where because of his unusual size he was mistaken for a child of go cart riding age.

When he was a young boy Trevor was given something extremely rare that every kid dreams of having... a power blanket!

Trevor received mostly good marks on his 1st grade report card, however there was a note scribbled in by hand that read, "Needs to be careful of interruptions at the rug."

In the summer of '94 Trevor asked a neighbor girl to pick blackberries with him. She declined because she "just wanted to be friends."

In January of '97 a close friend of Trevor's was lost to brain cancer.

Trevor bought his first Abercrombie and Fitch shirt with his brother Shawn's discount so that he would be prepared for Junior High.

Trevor thought that he was so cool when he was dating a senior cheerleader in his sophomore year in high school. (It wasn't that cool)

His senior year of high school he was the runner up in Mr. Mustang (a comedy competition), and he was the Homecoming King.

In 2003 Trevor faced a life-threatening infection and beat it.

After a full recovery, and many months of not being able to do much, Trevor craved adventure. His fix was a 3 month employment on a fishing vessel in Alaska.

Trevor graduated from the Art Institute of Seattle with a degree in Audio Production in June of 2006.

He landed his first Job only weeks after graduation, and now is working at Adobe.

In January of this year Trevor asked the neighbor girl to marry him. She said yes.

Winter quarter is over, but I havn't slowed down. A few of the projects that I am working on this week are...

Expanding my board game, "Pass the Gas" making a kid version and a big kid version. This is the start of a poster that I am working on. The rest of the poster will list the different names/kinds of farts. It will be included in the big kid version of the game.

The other project that I am working on is getting the Patrick Sullivan Foundation fully suited with a new logo, and an awesome website. This is the latest version of the logo.
